Is it justified to celebrate Oct 2nd as Gandhi Jayanti neglecting Lal Bahadur Shastri ?

October 2nd marks the birthday of the father of the nation (India), Mahatma Gandhi and is celebrated as ‘Gandhi Jayanti’ every year. Celebrating a national holiday and remembering Bapu’s contribution to the nation, year after year, we have been completely ignoring the fact that 2nd October also marks the birthday of the former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Dr. Lal Bahadur Shastri contributed immensely during India’s freedom struggle and was even jailed by the British rulers. He was also called the prime minister that made no money because he worked for the nation and not for money.

Though Mahatma Gandhi’s contribution to the nation can never be forgotten, we do tend to forget Shastri’s struggle as a leader and a politician.

Is it justified to celebrate October 2nd only to mark the birthday of Gandhi all over the country without even mentioning Dr. Lal Bahadur Shastri ?
